Riding breeches are an essential piece of attire for all equestrians as they allow freedom of movement and maximum comfort in the saddle. The design of riding breeches is based on the concept of being able to ride comfortably without restriction of movement or impeding communication with the horse. With many varying designs of riding breeches now available, it is possible to find the perfect pair of breeches for a perfect riding experience.

Generally made from thin, elasticated fabric, riding breeches or as they're sometimes called, britches, allow the rider to feel the horse under their leg therefore enhancing the communication between horse and rider.

Full Seat Breeches

Full seat riding breeches, as the name suggests have a full seat which is made either from leather or silicone, depending on what the rider prefers. The grip begins at the knee and moves up into the seat which allows the rider to sit more firmly and securely in the saddle. Full seat breeches are very popular among dressage rider and eventing riders. Full seat riding breeches can have either a regular waist, but are also very common as high waist breeches which offer improved comfort and fit.

Knee Grip Breeches

Similar to full grip breeches, knee grip breeches or knee patch breeches offer additional grip but in the knee area only. Again, the grip can be made from silicone or leather. This is riders choice. Knee grip breeches are very popular among hunter and jumper riders as they encourage the knee to remain on the saddle but allow you to move into a two point seat or jump jumps without the restriction of a full seat. Knee grip breeches are commonly available in low, regular or high waist.

What is the difference between Jodhpurs & Breeches?

Sometimes confused, riding breeches and jodhpurs are similar and both used for equestrian riding, however, they are a very different design. Jodhpurs are inspired by the sport of polo and named after a city in India. The biggest difference between jodhpurs and breeches is the length and fitting at the bottom of the leg. Jodhpurs are full length with a straight or sometimes boot cut at the ankle and are generally worn with jodhpur boots (paddock boots). They often have an elastic strap at the bottom which is used to fit under short boots, keeping the lower leg of the jodhpurs in place when riding. Breeches on the other hand, often have an elastic insert on the calf and end above the ankle, allowing the rider to wear riding socks and tall boots. Jodhpurs are commonly worn by children until they're of age to wear tall boots, or adults who prefer riding in short boots.

Functional materials

Varying technical fabrics are used in riding breeches to improve rider comfort and performance. Made mostly from bi-elastic fabrics for complete freedom of movement as well as fitting and sculpting to the riders body perfectly. As well as elasticity most breeches are now highly breathable and quick drying improving rider comfort on warmer days. For colder days, there are winter riding breeches available with brushed fleece inner fabric, which are generally made from a softshell outer making them wind and water resistant as well as dirt resistant!

Colours & Styles of Riding Breeches
