Layering for equestrians

Navigating the Ups and Downs of Spring & Autumn Riding: A Layering Guide

Welcome to the shifting seasons of Spring & Autumn, where the only certainty is that the weather will be unpredictable! For equestrians, preparation for these ever changing conditions is key to ensure comfortable days in the saddle. At EquiZone, we understand that layering is more than just throwing on an extra sweater, it's a strategic approach, designed to keep you at the perfect temperature at all times. This quick guide will walk you through the essentials of effective layering, ensuring you'll be well prepared for whatever the weather decides to throw your way.

Understanding Layering

Layering your riding clothes allows you to adapt seamlessly to the ever changing weather conditions, ensuring you remain comfortable when riding. The principle behind layering is simple: wear multiple layers that you can add or remove as temperatures or weather conditions change. Each layer serves a specific function:

  • Base Layer: the base layer is the first layer you wear. This is your moisture management layer. It should wick away any sweat, keeping you dry and comfortable
  • Mid Layer: this layer provides insulation, trapping heat to keep you warm. It should be breathable, allowing moisture from the base layer to escape.
  • Outer Layer: the shield against the elements. This layer should be wind and waterproof (resistant at the least), yet breathable, protecting you from rain and wind chill, whilst allowing moisture from the under layers to escape.

Selecting the Right Material

Choosing the right fabrics and materials for each layer will play a significant role in how comfortable you are as the weather changes.

  • Base Layers: Opt for synthetic fibers like polyester or natural fibers like merino wool, both of which excel at moisture wicking as well as maintaining their insulation properties, even when wet.
  • Mid Layers: Fleece is a popular choice here as it is lightweight, warm and breathable. Lightweight down or synthetic fill jackets can also be effective if temperatures drop significantly.
  • Outer Layers: Look for options that are waterproof with taped seams, that offer wind protection and include features like pit zips or mesh lined pockets for added ventilation
