With so many types of bits on the market it can often be overwhelming trying to find the right one for your horse. But we're here to help! Our collection features a variety of bits in various mouth pieces and materials to ensure you can find the perfect bit for your's and your horses needs.

Types of Bits

Loose Ring Snaffles: Loose ring snaffles offer flexibility and comfort for your horse, allowing them to position the bit where they find it most comfortable. The movable mouthpiece on the cheek of the bit makes it ideal for horses that tend to be heavy on the bit.

Eggbutt Bits: Among the most popular English Snaffle bts, the eggbutt is an excellent choice for training young horses or general riding. Thanks to its "fixed" cheek, the horse has a more stable feeling, unlike the movable loose ring.

Full Cheek Snaffles: Full cheek snaffles are excellent for steering horses, while preventing the bit from being pulled through the mouth. This makes them highly suitable for young horses learning to respond to rein aids, or in the show jumping arena when the horse needs to stay straighter in their turns.

D-Ring Snaffles: Similar to the full cheek snaffle, the D ring, as the name suggests, features a D shape, this helps to provide stability for the mouthpiece and prevents it from pinching or sliding through your horses mouth.

Hackamores: Ideal for horses with oral issues or other mouth problems, such as tongue damage or resistance to a bit, the hackamore is a good alternative as no mouth piece is placed in the horses mouth. It can also be a good option for horses who suffer problems such as head shaking, excessive salivation or rearing issues.

Pelham: Combining elements of both a curb and snaffle bit, the pelham acts similar to the function of a double bridle. Commonly seen in the show jumping arena, it is a good option for horses who can get strong in the arena, but it should only be used in experienced hands.

Choosing the Right Bit Size for your Horse

Measuring the size of your horses mouth is essential to knowing which size bit you'll require. The best way to measure is using the 2-finger test developed by Sprenger. Insert your index and middle fingers in the horse's mouth, where the bit would go. If the distance between the upper and lower jawbone is small, opt for a 14-16 mm thickness. For a greater distance, choose a 16-18 mm thickness.

Choosing the Right Mouth Piece

The correct bit for your horse depends on factors like your horses anatomy, temperament, habits and training level. An anatomically shaped, double jointed mouthpiece can encourage chewing, while single jointed mouth piece may be more suited to a horse who tens to chew on the bit a lot. While a horse that may lean on the bit could be more suited to a flexible or rubber mouth piece.

Choosing the Right Material

Bits have evolved throughout time, previously most bits were made of copper or stainless steel. It is now possible to choose between sweet iron, flexible plastic, rigid plastic, leather or of course the classic copper or stainless steel. Sweet Iron reacts with saliva which creates a pleasant taste in your horses mouth, encouraging them to chew on the bit, whilst stainless steel bits are smooth, durable and easy to maintain. Leather bits are ideal for sensitive horses who need something softer to chew on when working, whilst flexible plastic bits are also a great choice for sensitive horses.
