This helps prevent you from being dragged due to your foot being stuck in the stirrup. One released the arm automatically returns to the closed position, meaning you do not need to purchase a new pair of stirrups after the arm is released. 

The slip resistant wooden pad ensures maximum adherence and stability of your foot when riding. When walking on the sand arena, the sand will not stick to the stirrups as is often the case with metal stirrup pads.
