Pelham Single Jointed Short Sweet Iron

Velari Pelham Single Jointed Short Sweet Iron - combines the direct action of a single-jointed mouthpiece with the additional leverage of a Pelham bit. Its short shanks allow the leverage to be regulated with greater subtlety, distributing pressure between the mouth, poll and, when used with a curb chain, the chin area. This makes the bit suitable for horses requiring additional support with control, balance and responsiveness.

The 16 mm mouthpiece is made from sweet iron and naturally oxidises during use. According to the manufacturer, the resulting taste can encourage salivation and support acceptance of the bit. When the reins are taken up, the single-jointed mouthpiece forms a V-shape and provides clear, direct transmission of the aids across the tongue and bars. According to the manufacturer, this construction can be particularly suitable for horses with a higher palate.

The short Pelham shanks provide milder and more easily regulated leverage than longer shanks. The bit can be used with two sets of reins or a bit converter, allowing the rider to differentiate between direct and leverage action. A curb chain can also be used to stabilise the action and distribute pressure more evenly.
