Every rider knows that horses can be unpredictable. Even the most experienced equestrians face the risk of falls or accidents — and in those moments, a helmet can make all the difference. That’s why Helmet Safety Awareness Week (1st – 7th September) is such an important reminder for our community: safety always comes first.
The Story Behind Helmet Safety Awareness Week
The campaign traces back to 2010, when Olympic dressage rider Courtney King-Dye suffered a severe brain injury after falling from her horse without a helmet. She spent weeks in a coma, and her accident sparked the Riders4Helmets movement.
What started as a push to raise awareness, quickly grew into a global initiative, now recognized as International Helmet Awareness Day/Week. Its mission is simple: to encourage every rider, at any level, to wear a helmet every time they ride.
Since then, the equestrian world has made huge progress. In 2021, the FEI (International Equestrian Federation) made helmets mandatory in competition, a clear sign of how vital safety has become in our sport.
Why Helmets Matter More Than Ever
-
Head injuries are the most common serious riding injury. A properly fitted helmet dramatically reduces the risk of lasting trauma.
-
Modern helmets combine safety and style. Today’s designs meet the highest standards while offering comfort, ventilation, and sleek looks.
-
One ride is all it takes. Even quiet hacks or training sessions carry risk — which is why the golden rule is: every ride, every time.
